Below we are going to break down the different levels of EV chargers and what charge times and options they can offer.

Level 1 Charger:
Aka trickle charging, you can plug in your electric vehicle into a standard wall outlet (120 volts). Sometimes these outlets can be hidden around your house outside or in your garage. It will take longer to charge your vehicle this way, but this is a great option if you are in a pinch and need to charge your vehicle at someones house for a little while. In order to level one charge your electric vehicle you need to plug it into the outlet and then on the other end, plutg it into your vehicle. Using a level one charger you will gain 5 miles of range every hour. If you do not have a long commute or a plug-in hybrid this option of charging would be perfect for you. These chargers come with all electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. They will have a J1772 connector on the end of them or a Tesla connector if you purchase a Tesla. Double check and see which type of connector your vehicle accepts, there are adapters out there as well.

Level 2 Charger
A level 2 charger can also be used at home. A electrician will have to come to your home and install your level 2 charger. They will either have to hard wire it or install it to an outlet that gives enough power (240 volts). Since these chargers require more voltage, they will charge your electric vehicle faster. When using a level 2 charger, you will gain 25 miles of range per hour. You will see this charger at restaurants, shopping centers and rest stops. A level two charger is best used for a quick charge while you are out shopping or when you come home from work and you want to top off your electric vehicle battery's range.

Level 3 Charger
Aka dc charger. This is more commonly found at malls, rest stops, hotels or other public places. This is the fastest way to charge your electric vehicle in a short amount of time. These stations will give you 250 miles of range in one hour, depending on the vehicle. This is a great option if you need a super quick charge on your lunch break, running an errands, or at a rest stop. If you own a Tesla you have another option as well. Tesla has their own super chrgers, which also fall under the catergory of a dc charger. You can charger other EVS at Tesla super charger stations. You have to make sure you find a super charger station with a magic dock connector. Download the Tesla app and it will give you a list of locations with the magic doc connector. Charging at a level 3 charging station will be slightly more expensive than a level 2; but it will still be less expensive then filling up an ICE vehicle with gasoline.
