Unsure if Electric is Right for You?

Owning a car, any car, is about knowing that it can get you where you need to go. Most electric vehicles can drive over 100 miles on a single charge, with many exceeding 200 to 300 miles. The average person drives less than 40-miles per day, so the range of most EVs (electric vehicles) works just fine. So if you think EVs can't stand up to your work commute or getting the kids to practice, think again.

With just about 20 models on the market ranging from SUVs, sedans, hatchbacks, and luxury vehicles, it's easy to find one that's right for you. You can also opt for a fuel cell car, sometimes called a hydrogen vehicle, which has the range and refueling time similar to a gas-powered car. Or opt for completely electric and use a home charging station as well as the many nationwide public charging stations.

Does an Electric Car Drive the Same?

Everyone has their thing and if instant acceleration is yours, an electric car may be the route for you. Electric motors respond instantly, providing full torque from standstill. Electric cars typically accelerate far faster and smoother than gas-powered cars.

With some having a lower center of gravity than conventional cars, electric cars can hug the road and allow for a comfortable, smooth drive. It may be surprising at first to hear how quiet an electric car can be, but it is a testament to the cutting-edge technology that works to make the car smoother and more efficient. You can see for yourself with a test drive at Auto Outlets of Wolcott.

What’s the Difference in Hybrid and Electric?

Hybrid cars are powered by two engines: one gas, one electric. Both work with each other to spin the wheels. This leads to lesser petrol being burned and therefore better fuel efficiency. When compared to conventional vehicles, hybrids offer better power and fuel efficiency as they combine the benefits of high fuel efficiency and low emissions. When hybrid vehicles are cruising or while braking, the result is excess power which is used to charge the batteries. This, in turn, aids higher fuel efficiency or range.

The main difference between a hybrid car and an electric car is that the hybrid combines an internal combustion engine and electric motors to send power to its wheels. However, the electric car draws power from a single source of the electric motors to propel the vehicle. Electric vehicles pollute lower emissions compared to hybrid cars who are dependent on an internal combustion engine, but hybrids are a great option to ease into a more fuel efficient car while still having the convenience of a gas-powered-engine available.

While the electric powertrain in a regular hybrid only serves to support the combustion engine during times of increased load-like ignition and accelerating from a stop-a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) offers even more benefits. PHEVs have larger electric powertrains that provide better fuel economy and more power. Due to the increased battery capacity, PHEVs must be charged by an external source for maximum efficiency and performance. An additional benefit of plug-in powertrains is the ability to operate under battery power alone. Many PHEVs can travel more than 30 miles in electric-only mode before the gasoline engine kicks in. So, with opportune charging, Rochester drivers could enjoy emissions-free commutes using little to no gasoline.
