Recently purchased an EV, not too fond of the chimes/noise the vehicle makes while backing up? Wonder how you can disable chimes on your EV.
Legally you cannot and we do not recommend you try to disable the warning chimes on your electric vehicle. Because an electric vehicle does not contain a combustion engine that does make noise, you cannot hear it going by. Thus, the chime noise will help alert pedestrians that you are backing up. This requirement is not only for electric vehicles but also for plug-in hybrids and hybrids.
According to Green Car Reports “, the so-called ‘quiet car’ rule requires electrified vehicles to emit noises at speeds up to 18.6 mph as a warning to pedestrians and cyclists. Lack of exhaust noise makes cars harder to hear at these speeds, but tire noise, wind buffeting, and other sounds pick up at higher speeds, regulators have said.”
This requirement was made legal on vehicles that were built in 2020 and newer, any older vehicles may have the capability to disable the backup chime. To not only protect yourself and other pedestrians, but we also recommend not disabling the chime to prevent any accidents from happening.
With that being said, it creates a safety issue if you try to disable your electric vehicle’s chime. Whether you are looking for a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle; check out our wide selection at the electric car corner by Auto Outlets USA.
